Description: There are significant differences in how advanced practice nursing providers are treated between each state. Some states, such as California and Texas, require a significant level of physician supervision, while other states, including most of the West Coast and Northeast, allow nurse practitioners the latitude to set up independent practices. With the advent of the ACA, the increased demand for primary care provides is not likely to be covered by primary care physicians who are already in short supply. Many advocacy groups, including many national nursing organizations, have called for a relaxation of scope of practice restrictions, while some physician groups, most notably the American Medical Association and the American Association of Family Physicians, have expressed concerns over patient safety and other issues. This webinar addresses the current landscape of the regulation of advanced practice providers, the arguments and advocacy for relaxation of scope of practice restrictions and the arguments and advocacy against relaxation of those restrictions.
